How To Choose The Right Cancer Treatment Options For Cervical Cancer

Typically, a cancer is a situation of abnormal growth any cell in the human body. These growth abnormalities can be reported in different types of cells in different parts of the body. One such part is the cervix. This part of the female body is prone to cancer called cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer emerges from the cells lining the cervix area, also known as the lower uterus or the womb. In pregnancy the fetus grows in the upper uterus, the cervix links the uterus to the birth canal (Vagina).
The cervix area is divided into 2 parts with 2 different kinds of cells.
  • The area closed to the uterus body is made up of glandular cells and is called endocervix.
  • The region adjacent to the vagina is formed of squamous cells and is called exocervix.
These 2 regions meet at a place called transformation zone. The position of this area changes due to the factors of age, pregnancy etc. Generally, Cervical cancer develops in the transformation zone. But the cells here, do not directly multiply. They first undergo some per-cancerous transformation, in which they morph their shape and appearance. This change could be detected by some test and can help doctor stop this transformation.
There have been cases where these precancerous cells transformed into actual cancer within a year, but other cases have also been sited where precancerous cells take years to turn or just go away without any treatment.
Treatment
Cervical Cancer Treatment, involves a team of specialist formulating a treatment plan. This team is often called the disciplinary team and consists of doctors, surgeons, social workers, dieticians, counselors etc. Like any other cancer, the treatment will follow chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and a surgery at some point. However, a regular treatment plan is customized according to your stage, health, age, type of cancer and the patient’s preference.
The following are some treatment options for cervical cancer-
Surgery-
A gynecologic oncologic will be the specialist leading the surgery. Generally, a procedure called hysterectomy is used. The procedure will involve the surgical removal of the patient’s uterus as well as some parts of the vagina, along with some healthy surrounding tissues. In case if cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, that will also be removed. However, this surgery will deprive patient their ability to give birth. For the women who don’t want to lose their fertility, procedures like electrosurgical excision or LEEP procedure. LEEP procedure is an expensive endeavor but grants the patient with many benefits. It undergoes through local anesthesia and shares a high success rate.
Radiation therapy and Chemotherapy-
A radiation therapy uses high-intensity X-rays to destroy the cancer cells in the affected area. The same is done in chemotherapy but with the help of intense medication. Both these procedures can be substituted as a pre and post-surgery therapies. First to shrink the tumor size so that minimum tissue removal is ensured and post to ensure there is no cancer cell left in the system.
